JSW Steel has appointed Robert Simon as the chief executive officer of its US unit, a move aimed at bolstering the leadership team and driving growth in the American market. In his new role, Simon will assume responsibility for overseeing the entire spectrum of business operations, including slab, coil, pipe, and plate production, as well as sales activities at JSW Steel’s facilities in Baytown and Mingo Junction. Reporting directly to the respective boards of both subsidiary companies of JSW Steel, Simon will play a pivotal role in steering the strategic direction and operational efficiency of the US operations.

JSW Steel’s presence in the US market is significant, with a robust infrastructure comprising a 1.5 million tonnes per annum (MNTPA) electric arc furnace-based steel-making capacity in Ohio. Additionally, the company operates downstream product facilities, including a state-of-the-art 3-MNTPA hot-rolling mill in Ohio, a 1.2 MNTPA plate mill, and a 0.55 MNTPA pipe mill capacity in Baytown, Texas. With Simon at the helm, JSW Steel aims to capitalize on its existing strengths and explore new avenues for growth and expansion in the competitive US steel industry.

In the third quarter, the Texas mill under JSW Steel’s purview demonstrated solid performance, producing 97,829 net tonnes of plates and 7,219 net tonnes of pipes. Despite facing challenges such as capacity utilization rates of 40 percent for plates and 5 percent for pipes, the company remained resilient and managed to achieve substantial sales volumes of 86,985 net tonnes of plates and 5,532 net tonnes of pipes. The reported EBITDA of $18.67 million reflects the company’s commitment to operational excellence and financial stability.

Robert Simon brings a wealth of industry experience and expertise to his new role at JSW Steel. Prior to joining the company, Simon garnered invaluable insights and insights into the steel sector through his consultancy work with esteemed organizations such as OmniTrax in Denver, Colorado. Notably, he also served as the chief executive officer for the newly formed Bayou Steel Group, where he played a key role in driving growth and innovation within the organization. With his proven track record of leadership and strategic vision, Simon is poised to lead JSW Steel’s US operations to new heights of success and prosperity.
