Google pledges 25 million euros to strengthen media literacy in Europe

Google has reported to contribute 25 million euros towards the European Media and Information Fund to fortify media literacy skills, battle misinformation and back up fact checking.

In the coming weeks, the Fund will open for proposals from academics, nonprofits and publishers situated in the European Union, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland and the UK. Independent committees comprised of industry experts will choose the triumphant ideas and Google will not be associated with any dynamic identified with the Fund, the organization said in an explanation on Wednesday.

“Since 2015, we’ve given funding and specialized help to associations zeroed in on misinformation, including imaginative new models like CrossCheck in France, and gave digital verification training to 90,000 European journalists, accepting more than 400,000 visits to our training website,” Google educated. Through its philanthropic arm, Google.org, the organization has given 3.2 million euros in funding since 2018 to programs like Newswise, The Student View and Weitklick, and through the Google News Initiative extra funding to help Students for President and Zeit hide Lehrer.

“We are proceeding with our different endeavors to help media literacy for youngsters, with Be Internet Legends and Be Internet Citizens giving digital skills to help schoolchildren and teenagers verify and fact-check,” the organization said.
