In response to recent scrutiny over his extensive land purchases in Hawaii, Salesforce billionaire Marc Benioff announced a $150 million donation on Tuesday to enhance healthcare services in the island state. The contribution, a joint effort with his wife Lynne, follows a year-long collaboration involving three hospitals: Hilo Medical Center, Hawai’i Pacific Health, and UCSF Health.

In a joint statement, the Benioffs expressed gratitude for their longstanding ties to the Hawaiian community and emphasized the paramount importance of community health and equitable access to healthcare services.

However, concerns have arisen regarding Benioff’s land acquisitions in Hawaii, with reports indicating that he has acquired a significant property portfolio, often at premium prices. Local residents fear being priced out of their homes, especially as Benioff’s purchases include inland parcels. One notable incident involved a bakery in Waimea, which closed after receiving an offer significantly above market value.

In a recent NPR article, Benioff faced questions about his land investments and reportedly became visibly nervous when pressed for details about his plans for the properties. The article also suggested that Benioff attempted to exert influence over the journalist after expressing concerns about the article’s angle.

In response to the NPR article, the reporter shared unsettling details of her interaction with Benioff, recounting how he called her to demand information about the piece and referenced personal details about her and her family, leaving her feeling unnerved. Benioff could not be reached for comment on the matter.

According to Tuesday’s press release, the Benioffs’ cumulative donations in Hawaii now exceed $250 million. The latest contribution will support the establishment of a cutting-edge family birthing center, intensive care unit, and neurosurgical program, among other initiatives. It will also facilitate collaborations between Hawaiian healthcare facilities and UCSF Health in California, a recipient of significant donations from the couple.

Expressing their commitment to addressing local needs through expert-led initiatives, the Benioffs welcomed the opportunity to support the life-saving efforts of Hilo Medical Center, Hawai’i Pacific Health, and UCSF Health.

As a result of their generous donation, the Hilo Medical Center will be renamed the Hilo Benioff Medical Center, while the Straub Medical Center will be rebranded as the Straub Benioff Medical Center.
