Aldi, the German supermarket chain known for its budget-friendly deals and distinctive shopping carts requiring a quarter to unlock, is embarking on a massive $9 billion expansion plan worldwide. The company aims to open over 800 new stores across the United States by 2028, catering to customer demand and expanding its presence into new cities like Las Vegas.

CEO Jason Hart emphasized that the growth strategy is customer-driven, responding to demands for more Aldi stores in various neighborhoods nationwide. The expansion will positively impact the communities served by the new stores.

Most of the new Aldi locations will be concentrated in the Northeast, South, and Midwest regions, with additional stores planned for California and Arizona. The move into Las Vegas will mark Aldi’s first venture into Nevada, with plans to operate over 3,000 stores nationwide as part of the $9 billion investment.

Hart highlighted Aldi’s consistent growth, with hundreds of new stores opening annually. In 2021 alone, the company launched over 100 stores across several states, including California, Arizona, Florida, and the Northeast.

Aldi’s expansion strategy also involves acquiring Southern Grocers, the parent company of Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarkets. This acquisition allows Aldi to extend its reach in the Southeast, where there is significant demand for affordable, quality groceries.

In addition to opening new stores, Aldi plans to implement green initiatives in existing locations. This includes installing solar panels on store roofs and transitioning to energy-efficient LED lighting, demonstrating the company’s commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility.
