The film Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is based on the Marvel Comics character Black Panther. It is supposed to be the sequel to Black Panther (2018) and the 30th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures (MCU). Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Martin Freeman, Daniel Kaluuya, Letitia Wright, Winston Duke, Angela Bassett, and Dominique Thorne feature in the picture, which is directed by Ryan Coogler, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Joe Robert Cole.

Following the release of Black Panther in February 2018, ideas for a sequel began to emerge. In the following months, Coogler agreed to return as director, and Marvel Studios confirmed the sequel’s development in mid-2019. When Chadwick Boseman, who starred in Black Panther, died of colon cancer in August 2020, Marvel decided not to recast his role of T’Challa. By November, more key cast members from the first film had been confirmed, and the title had been revealed in May 2021. Before a delay to allow Wright to recover from an injury experienced while filming, production took place in Atlanta and Brunswick, Georgia, as well as around Massachusetts, from late June to early November 2021. By mid-January 2022, production had resumed.

With the release of Black Panther in February 2018, producer Kevin Feige stated that there were “many, many stories” to tell about the character, and that he wanted director and co-writer Ryan Coogler to return for any sequel; Marvel Studios wanted to keep the creative team intact as much as possible, and Walt Disney Studios chairman Alan F. Horn, despite believing it was too early to discuss a sequel, was also optimistic about having Coogler return as director. Coogler was interested in seeing how Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa / Black Panther developed as a king in subsequent films, given that his reign in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) had just recently begun, in contrast to the books, where he had been king since boyhood.

Nyong’o stated in March 2021 that the sequel will be different from the original film and that she was excited about Coogler’s intentions. She emphasised that everyone engaged in the production was committed to carrying on Boseman’s legacy.  Coogler revealed that he was still working on the screenplay and that working on the picture without Boseman was the most difficult thing he had ever done. He went on to say that Boseman had held the first picture together, and now he was the one attempting to keep it going as the director.
