The fifth Indiana Jones film, which has yet to be named, is a prospective American action-adventure film directed by James Mangold and written by Mangold, Jez Butterworth, and John-Henry Butterworth. The film is a sequel to 2008‘s Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and the fifth episode in the Indiana Jones film series. It’s the first instalment without Steven Spielberg directing or writing the story, with Spielberg instead serving as a producer. Harrison Ford returns as Indiana Jones, with Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Mads Mikkelsen, Thomas Kretschmann, Boyd Holbrook, Shaunette Renée Wilson, Toby Jones, and Antonio Banderas joining the cast. Since Lucasfilm’s acquisition, it is the first film in the series to be distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.Disney released it in 2012. Since the acquisition, it is also Lucasfilm’s first live-action picture outside of the Star Wars series.
Lucas started looking into plot devices in 2008, but the project was put on hold for several years. In 2012, when Kathleen Kennedy became the president of Lucasfilm, he handed over the project to her. While the studio was working on the Star Wars sequel trilogy, no progress on a fifth feature was made. In 2016, David Koepp was engaged to write the fifth film, with a 2019 release date set, despite the fact that the story had to be rewritten numerous times. In 2018, Jonathan Kasdan was hired to replace Koepp, and in 2019, Koepp was once again working on the script before departing the project.
