Social media giant Facebook seems to have to an unending meet with legal troubles. Today, an Amsterdam court allowed officials to continue with their privacy litigation against the social media giant. The lawsuit was filed in court by two non-profit groups and it appears that the social media giant failed in having the lawsuits thrown out of court.
As reports by TechCrunch indicate, Facebook is being seriously sued by Consumentenbond as a representative of Dutch Facebook users on the basis of their claims of breaking the privacy laws put forth by European Union. Consumentenbond is a Data Privacy Foundation and Dutch consumer advocacy organization headquartered in Amsterdam. The filed lawsuits state that Facebook failed to provide sufficient subtleties regarding the user information collected on its social media platform. Thereby, Facebook was devoid of any legal rights to store and process the user data.
Mark Zuckerberg’s company just had two antitrust cases against it dismissed just a few days ago after it successful crossed a market cap of $1 trillion. However, things didn’t seem to stay merry for long as it had to face the Dutch lawsuits next. The social media giant tried to dismiss the legal proceedings by asserting claims that the court in Amsterdam had no jurisdiction over its business in Europe. Instead, the lawsuits are subject to Ireland and its court. However, the Amsterdam court was quick in pointing out to the social media giant that “The Data Privacy Foundation may litigate before the Dutch court on behalf of Dutch users of the Facebook service against Facebook about whether Facebook has violated the privacy of its users.”
The Verge revealed that a company spokesperson had emailed to them stating that they are in the process to review what the court had stated. The spokesperson also notified that the ruling was a normal procedure and that Facebook will never shy away from defending itself in court.
