Branch Sparks Postgame Brawl After Punching Smith-Schuster
The closing moments of Sunday night’s contest between the Detroit Lions and Kansas City Chiefs boiled over into chaos. After Kansas City secured a 30-17 victory, Lions safety Brian Branch struck JuJu Smith-Schuster in the face, igniting a brief but intense postgame scuffle between players from both sides.
What set it off was a simple exchange gone wrong. As the clock expired, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes offered Branch a high-five near midfield. Branch walked past him, and Smith-Schuster approached, seemingly upset by the slight interaction. Words were exchanged, and then — Branch connected with a punch on Smith-Schuster’s facemask, knocking him to the ground.
Smith-Schuster leapt up and sought confrontation. Branch, who had played despite dealing with an ankle injury that limited his practice during the week, was involved in a tussle that saw him rip off Smith-Schuster’s helmet amid swirling players.
Words, Justifications, and Regret
Immediately after the incident, Branch admitted his reaction was immature. “It was a childish thing … I should have never did it,” he said, though he described feeling bullied on the field and frustrated by non-calls between plays.
Smith-Schuster, for his part, said he expected a handshake but was met with a punch. He defended his approach, saying, “I play between whistles … I’m just doing my job.”
Branch also claimed that Smith-Schuster blocked him in the back late in the game, in front of officials who didn’t respond — that, he said, rattled him. But both players acknowledged Branch went too far.
Detroit’s coach, Dan Campbell, was quick to condemn the action. He apologized to Chiefs head coach Andy Reid and Smith-Schuster, stating, “What he did is inexcusable … That’s not what we do here.”
Meanwhile, Chiefs coach Reid expressed concern for his player, noting the punch landed hard. “He did pretty good damage on JuJu’s nose,” Reid said.
Veteran Lions defensive lineman DJ Reader said he’d speak with Branch after emotions cooled, stressing the need for both passion and discipline.
Game Context & Fallout
Detroit’s stumble snapped a four-game win streak and dashed hopes of back-to-back wins at Arrowhead Stadium. Over the course of the night, the Lions allowed 355 yards of total offense, forced only one punt, and failed to make key stops late in the game.
Offensively, Jared Goff passed for just 203 yards, connecting for touchdowns with Jameson Williams and Sam LaPorta, but saw limited efficiency elsewhere. Amon-Ra St. Brown was held to 45 receiving yards, while Jahmyr Gibbs managed 65 yards on 17 carries.
Now, Branch may face repercussions beyond team discipline. He was previously fined $23,186 for face-masking and unsportsmanlike conduct in an earlier game, making further penalties or even suspension possible.
