Bollywood Legend Dharmendra, the “He-Man,” Dies at 89

Bollywood icon Dharmendra Deol has died at the age of 89, leaving behind a massive legacy in Indian cinema. Known to many as the “He-Man” of Bollywood, he passed away in his Mumbai home after a recent illness and hospital stay.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences, calling Dharmendra’s death “the end of an era” in Indian film.


From Screen Hero to Cultural Icon

Born Dharmendra Kewal Krishan Deol in 1935 in Punjab, he made his Bollywood debut in 1960. Over more than six decades, he appeared in 300+ films, spanning action, romance, comedy, and drama.

He was best known for his role as Veeru in the 1975 classic Sholay, where he formed one half of the iconic duo with Amitabh Bachchan. His muscular screen presence, rugged charm, and versatile acting earned him the “He-Man” nickname.


Beyond Film: Public Life & Legacy

Dharmendra’s influence extended beyond cinema. He served as a Member of Parliament in India from 2004 to 2009, representing Bikaner for the BJP. He was also awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2012, one of India’s highest civilian honors.

Politicians, filmmakers, and fans flooded social media with tributes. Several praised his on-screen charisma as well as his warmth and humility off-screen.


The Final Act

Shortly before his passing, Dharmendra had been hospitalized for respiratory issues He was later taken home for care, where he died peacefully surrounded by family.

One of his last scheduled films, Ikkis (directed by Sriram Raghavan), is expected to release posthumously, serving as a final tribute to his enduring craft.
