Boba Tea Brand in Turmoil After Simu Liu's 'Cultural Appropriation' Critique Sparks TikTok Outcry
Popular boba tea brand Bobba became at the center of a huge controversy when an actor posted a viral video on TikTok accusing the brand of cultural appropriation.
The controversy created a lot of noise online and inspired calls for boycotting and protesting the brand.
The drama ensued when Liu was spotted on the Canadian version of the reality show The Amazing Race, in which he appeared owing to his prominent role in the Marvel film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. At one point in the show where the contestants were asked to come up with their own boba tea drinks, Liu appeared distraught at how the brand was being represented.
Liu also accused Bobba of stereotyping and cultural appropriation. He points out that boba tea is, in fact, originally from Taiwan where the majority of Chinese-Chinese people have been hooked on drinking boba or more popularly known as bubble tea for a long time. Liu criticized the brand of commercializing and Westernizing the authentic presentation of the boba tea.
Liu's comments went viral almost instantly on TikTok and things were hot on the debatefront among the viewers. Some were supporting Liu, who said Bobba is guilty of cultural appropriation. Others came to defend the brand by stating that the brand was at least trying to introduce boba tea to a much more massive audience.
The controversy has widely defamed Bobba. The brand was overwhelmed with negative comments and reviews on social media. Several people called for boycotts and protests against the company.
In reply, Bobba released a statement where he stated his acceptance of the issues heaped upon him by Liu. The firm promised to revisit and review its marketing and branding policies with regards to being more respectful toward the cultural identity of China.
But many more critics are not easily convinced by the apology statement by Bobba. They comment that the company must do much more than providing an official statement in response to the issue. They voiced out a demand on the concrete actions of Bobba in light of the issues raised by Liu so that its products will be appropriately represented in a culturally sensitive manner.
Hence, the scandal involving Bobba has brought out the importance of cultural appropriation awareness, respect towards different cultures, and the potency of social media. It is a new wake-up call to companies about the importance of transparency in what they do. From here onwards, only time can be the judge as to whether Bobba can recover from the damage done to it by Liu's accusation.
