All You Should Know About "The Alumni" (2024): A Time-Traveling Sci-Fi Adventure at Kent State

"The Alumni" (2024) is a short, but gripping, sci-fi film that blends time travel with the intrigue of university life, set against the historical backdrop of Kent State University. Directed by Bryant Anderson and written by Niece Anderson and Shawnee Idahosa, this 17-minute movie promises a rollercoaster of suspense, as two determined graduate students uncover a mystery tied to one of the most significant events in U.S. history.

Set in the present day, the film follows two female alumni—Shawnee Idahosa and Charlee Rabb—who are working towards their Physics Master's degrees. Their academic journey takes an unexpected turn when, during an experiment, they are  catapulted back in time to May 1970—right to the heart of the infamous Kent State shootings. Unwittingly thrust into this seminal moment of American history, they must navigate the complicated political and emotional tension of the time, all the  while trying to figure out what precipitated their time travel and how to get  back  to their own time.

The Alumni is a historical fiction sci-fi novel that surely taps into the fertile soil of sci-fi. As the two heroes discover their new setting, they are racing against time to  figure out why they have been transported back. Accompanying their school and scientific endeavors, they are at the hub of a contentious political scene at Kent State, in which the torch of protest and campus revolt was beginning to flare up in reaction to the Vietnam War. As they work to piece together their timeline, they  have to confront personal dilemmas, historical realities, and the urgency of returning to their own time.

Of course, the time travel is a major theme, but "The Alumni" also explores the complexities of history, memory, and their relationships with past and present. Through the eyes of the protagonists, the film explores how historical events shape identity, education, and the trajectories of people's lives. Their journey becomes not only racing to solve a scientific mystery but also an exploration of the extent  of control one might have over their destiny, especially the weight of history.

The two lead actors, Shawnee Idahosa and Charlee Rabb, give outstanding  performances. They both played integral roles in writing and developing the story  as well. Idahosa's portrayal of one of the time-traveling women is captivating, offering a blend of curiosity and determination as she faces the unknown. Rabb, playing the other alumna, really brings a grounded energy to the narrative, adding a layer of humor and emotional depth. Supporting performances come from Alex Lammers and David Dietz, each helping flesh out the tense atmosphere of the era.

A Critical Time in American History The film takes place in May 1970, placing  it  squarely in the middle of one of the most crucial periods in American history. The Kent State shootings - in which National Guard troops opened fire on unarmed students protesting the Vietnam War - serve as a chilling backdrop to the protagonists' time-travel dilemma. "The Alumni" doesn't just use this moment in history as its backdrop; it waxes it into the narrative, allowing the characters to reflect about its importance while dealing with the consequences of their unexpected journey.

Although it is just 17 minutes in length, "The Alumni" packs a punch, bringing into  the fray the thrills of science fiction and poignant reflection on history and the impact that it has on the individual. The film, with its creative narrative and rich themes, will definitely become a must-watch once it hits theaters on December 1, 2024. Fans of time travel and fans of science fiction, history,  would positively  enjoy a glimpse into this unique storytelling experience.

By the film's release date, fans can expect to get even more behind-the-scenes  insight and possibly even more historical background on the Kent State shootings. The anticipation for this project is already building, and "The Alumni" promises to be a thought-provoking and visually captivating experience that will resonate long after the credits roll.
