Tornado Hits Urbandale: Power Outages Expected to Last Until Tuesday

On Monday evening, a tornado was confirmed to have touched down in Urbandale, Iowa, causing significant damage. The National Weather Service (NWS) confirmed the storm’s impact, with details on damage expected after further surveys on Tuesday.

The tornado was part of a larger severe weather system that swept through the Des Moines metro area. The storm caused widespread damage, including fallen trees and power outages, especially in Windsor Heights, Urbandale, and the west side of Des Moines.

Over 10,000 homes in the Des Moines metro area experienced power outages due to the storm. MidAmerican Energy Company reported that power restoration efforts are underway but some areas may remain without power until Tuesday evening.

In Urbandale, the storm caused extensive damage. Trees fell across streets and onto homes. One notable incident involved a large tree falling on a house on Oak Brook Drive, crushing the front of the residence.

Residents of the affected areas, including Beaverdale, are assessing the damage to their properties. Many were caught off guard by the storm, and efforts are underway to clear debris and address damage.

The severe thunderstorm watch remains in effect until 11 p.m., with conditions for additional storms developing. These storms could bring wind gusts up to 85 mph and large hail, continuing the threat to the region.

MidAmerican Energy is working to restore power to affected homes. The company estimates that most customers will have their power back by 7 a.m. Tuesday, though some may face outages until later in the day.
