OpenAI Criticizes Elon Musk’s Claims as ‘Convoluted’ and ‘Incoherent’

In a court filing on Monday, OpenAI responded to Elon Musk’s lawsuit, dismissing his claims as based on “convoluted — often incoherent — factual premises.”

This latest development is part of an ongoing dispute between Musk and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman regarding the direction of artificial intelligence research, particularly as OpenAI’s ChatGPT technology transforms its applications.

Musk initiated the lawsuit earlier this month against OpenAI and Altman, alleging that they deviated from the company’s founding agreement to prioritize AI research for the betterment of humanity over profit.

According to Musk, who co-founded OpenAI as a non-profit organization, he, Altman, Greg Brockman, and other co-founders had initially agreed that the company would operate as an open-source nonprofit focused on developing AI for humanity’s benefit. However, Musk claimed that this founding agreement was disregarded.

In response, OpenAI asserted that there was no such founding agreement with Musk, as stated in the lawsuit. Therefore, the company contended that Musk’s claims lack a basis.

OpenAI argued against Musk’s requested relief, stating that it is as extraordinary as the claims presented in the lawsuit. The company emphasized that Musk’s demand for OpenAI to reorganize and distribute its technology according to his alleged contract is unfounded.

On the other hand, Musk accused OpenAI of transitioning into a closed-source entity indirectly linked to Microsoft, aiming to maximize profits. He criticized the company’s shift away from its original nonprofit objectives.
