Barack Obama's daughter Malia changes her famous surname amid her debut in Hollywood as a filmmaker

Malia, the eldest daughter of Barack and Michelle Obama, recently renounced her well-known family last name.

This big shift occurs as the 25-year-old prepares for her big Hollywood film debut.

Before her short film, The Heart in Utah, had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, the aspiring director changed her stage name.

Back in January, the Harvard alumna abandoned her last name, Obama. Malia Ann was the name given to the daughter of the previous US President in the Meet the Artist feature film from Sundance Institute.

The Heart, a short film by Malia, centers on the deep and nuanced bond between a mother and her kid. John Weigand, LaTonya Borsay, and Tunde Adebimpe are in the main cast of the movie.

Malia characterized the movie as “an odd little story, somewhat of fable, about a man grieving the death of his mother after she leaves him an unusual request in her will” in her spotlight video.

Malia worked as an intern at Harvey Weinstein's production firm and on the HBO drama series Girls before making her Hollywood debut.

Malia has also contributed as a staff writer on Swarm, an Amazon Prime series starring Donald Glover.
