BAFTA reacts after Matthew Perry fans criticise it for not including him in Memoriam segment

After learning that the late actor Matthew Perry will not be honored in the In Memoriam section of the 2024 BAFTA Film Awards, fans expressed their sorrow. BAFTA received negative feedback on social media as a result.

People criticized BAFTA on X, labeling the alleged omission as "bad form" and posting a GIF of Chandler Bing from Matthew's Friends with the comment, "You can't make this stuff up." "@Matthewperry One person remarked, "Why wasn't he mentioned in the BAFTAs????."

"#BAFTA what happened to Matthew Perry in your memoriam," another person wrote. I am aware that he is well-known for TV Friends, but he also made some startling film mistakes."

Now, BAFTA has addressed the criticism on social media.

A BAFTA representative informs PEOPLE in response to Matthew's exclusion from the memorial, "I can confirm Matthew Perry will be remembered in our forthcoming BAFTA Television Awards."

"Matthew Perry will be remembered in this year's TV Awards ceremony," BAFTA said on X, echoing this sentiment. The academy also published a link to its online tribute to the actor, PEOPLE reported.

At his Los Angeles home on Saturday, October 28, Matthew passed away.

It was eventually established that acute ketamine effects were the primary cause of his death, with additional circumstances playing a role.

The actor was most recently mentioned in the 2023 Emmy Awards' In Memoriam section last month. Pictured with Charlie Puth at his 2015 hit performance was Matthew.
