Valentine’s Day brought no love for the Colorado State Rams as they suffered a narrow 67-64 defeat against UNLV on Wednesday night. Despite a stellar performance from sophomore Marta Leimane, who recorded her first career double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds, the Rams couldn’t secure the win.
The game started with the Rams trailing 11-4 early in the first quarter, but they quickly mounted a comeback, going on a 10-2 run to take a one-point lead. Both teams traded baskets throughout the first half, with CSU shooting 11-of-30 from the field and 4-of-10 from beyond the arc. UNLV, meanwhile, struggled from long range, shooting just 4-of-13 from 3-point range in the first half.
In the third quarter, the Rams found their rhythm from beyond the arc, hitting 5-of-7 3-pointers to take a 51-49 lead heading into the final frame. However, UNLV staged a comeback in the fourth quarter, going on a 9-2 run to wipe out CSU’s lead and ultimately secure the victory.
Despite the loss, Marta Leimane’s standout performance earned her praise, leading the team in both scoring and rebounding. Sanna Strom and Sydney Mech also contributed with double-digit scoring performances, but it wasn’t enough to overcome UNLV’s balanced attack.
Looking ahead, Colorado State will return to Moby Arena this weekend for a matchup against Wyoming. With the men’s basketball team set to follow the women’s game, the Rams will be eager to bounce back and secure a win on their home court.
