Omaha Area Hit by Severe Storm: Power Outages

Over 33,000 OPPD customers originally lost power as a line of thunderstorms passed across eastern Nebraska and western Iowa . The majority of the outages, according to a utility company official, happened in Douglas and Washington Counties. He stated that as of 7:45 a.m., 33,554 consumers were without electricity.

Early in the afternoon, that number sharply dropped. In a 12:15 p.m. update, it was reported that 11,386 people were without power. The OPPD spokesman said there have been complaints of stop lights that are malfunctioning as well as downed power lines in various locations throughout the Omaha metro region. Customers are also experiencing outages in Sarpy and Cass Counties.

According to the spokesman, crews are evaluating the damage and working to restore electricity as swiftly and safely as they can. Any person who comes across a downed electrical line should always presume it is active and proceed with caution.

As of six in the morning, 0.59 of an inch of rain had fallen on Katie Gross’ office, a meteorologist with the Valley office of the National Weather Service. Later in the day, more rainfall totals are anticipated to be released.

Through the Nebraska counties of Lancaster, Seward, Butler, and Saunders, the line of thunderstorms headed eastward. According to Gross, wind gusts as high as 70 mph were recorded in Valley, 74 mph in Omaha, and 82 mph in the Dodge County settlement of Uhling. The risk of severe weather is anticipated to significantly decrease Wednesday afternoon, according to Gross. Omaha anticipates a high in the mid-80s with significant humidity. South of Interstate 80, 90-degree temperatures are anticipated.
