Barbie Co-writer Noah Baumbach Skips Premiere Amid Strike

It was a glitzy and glamorous affair at the world premiere of Greta Gerwig’s highly anticipated film, “Barbie,” held at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. The venue underwent a magical transformation into a vibrant pink paradise for the star-studded event. Hollywood’s A-listers Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling graced the occasion with their presence, but there was one noticeable absence that raised eyebrows – Noah Baumbach, the co-writer of the film and Gerwig’s partner.

During her heartfelt speech, Gerwig expressed her gratitude for Baumbach’s invaluable contribution to “Barbie” and shed light on his conspicuous absence. It turns out Baumbach was standing in solidarity with the Writers Guild of America in their ongoing fight, emphasizing the significance of writers in the entertainment industry. Gerwig acknowledged that “Barbie” wouldn’t have been possible without Baumbach as she eloquently put it, “Noah Baumbach is not here tonight. He is passionately supporting the fight of the Writers Guild of America. He is a Barbie girl. Nothing in ‘Barbie’ happened without him, and nothing in Hollywood happens without writers.” Her words resonated with the audience, shining a spotlight on the vital role that writers play in the creation of the stories we love.

The ongoing 2023 Writers Guild of America strike remains a significant labor dispute between the Writers Guild of America (WGA), representing 11,500 screenwriters, and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP). This strike marks the most substantial disruption to American television and film production since the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and the largest labor stoppage performed by the WGA since the 2007-08 strike.
