Minnesota Vikings Part Ways with Running Back Alexander Mattison

SportsMinnesota Vikings Part Ways with Running Back Alexander Mattison

In a surprising move, the Minnesota Vikings have decided to release running back Alexander Mattison, marking the end of his tenure with the team. The decision comes just one year after Mattison signed a lucrative two-year contract worth $7 million with the Vikings.

The 25-year-old running back, who was drafted by the Vikings in the third round back in 2019, has been a consistent presence in the team’s backfield for the past four seasons. Initially serving as a reliable backup to star running back Dalvin Cook, Mattison’s role expanded significantly in 2023 following Cook’s departure from the team.

Despite stepping into the starting role, Mattison’s performance on the field failed to meet the expectations set by his new position. While he achieved career highs in rushing attempts and yards during the 2023 season, he notably struggled to find the end zone, failing to record a rushing touchdown throughout the year.

In addition to his contributions in the running game, Mattison also showcased his versatility as a pass-catcher, making significant contributions in the passing game with 30 receptions for 192 yards and three touchdowns.

Despite his efforts, the Vikings have ultimately opted to part ways with Mattison, citing the need to reshape their roster and allocate resources more effectively. With Mattison’s release, the Vikings will look to explore other options in the running back position as they continue to build for the future.

As Mattison hits the open market, he leaves behind a legacy of hard work and dedication during his time with the Vikings. With his talent and experience, it’s likely that Mattison will draw interest from other teams in the NFL as he looks to continue his professional football career.
