Some islands have a reputation for being scary or gloomy. These locations could be well-known because of eerie or terrifying folklore, noteworthy occasions, or difficult surroundings.



Poveglia Island (Italy): Considered to be among the world’s most haunted islands, Poveglia Island has a reputation for being haunted by ghosts and has previously served as a quarantine facility and a mental hospital.

Hashima Island (Japan): Also known as “Battleship Island,” Hashima Island is a defunct coal mining operation with an eerie ambiance, dilapidated structures, and a history of unfavourable working conditions.




The Izu Islands (Japan): A series of volcanic islands that frequently experience volcanic activity, including eruptions and the release of toxic gases. In example, Miyakejima, an uninhabited island, has seen evacuations because of volcanic risks.
